Women of the Bible Week 2

Deborah

Judges 4:1-4:
The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died. So the Lord sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly twenty years.
"At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel."

A prophet was a man and a prophetess was a woman. Other than that, their specific calling was the same; that is, to receive direct revelation from God (usually about future events) and to pass that along to others.(www.learnthebible.org)

Judge(biblical)- the position is more one of unelected non-hereditary leadership^[2] than that of legal pronouncement. In accordance with the needs of the time, their functions were primarily martial and judicial, comparable to a king (but not anointed).(wikipedia) In English the term "judge" generally means to "render judicial decision", however the Hebrew word "sopet" means to "rule" or "exercise lordship."

Judges 4:5-10:

She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, 'The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you, "Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand."'Barak said to her, 'If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.' And she said, "I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.' Then Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh. Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and ten thousand warriors went up behind him; and Deborah went up with him."

The thing that I find most amazing in this scripture is the fact that Deborah is the judge of all of Gods people. I have often heard that God only uses women when men are not doing the work that needed to be done. In the passage it speaks of how Barak did not want to go to Mount Tabot. It almost seems like Barak was not sure of his own ability to follow Gods command.

Judges 4:11- 15

Now Heber the Kenite had separated from the other Kenites, that is, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had encamped as far away as Elon-bezaanannim, which is near Kedesh.When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, Sisera called out all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the troops who were with him, from Harosheth-ha-goiim to the Wadi Kishon. Then Deborah said to Barak, 'Up! For this is the day on which the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. The Lord is indeed going out before you.' So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand warriors following him."

Judges 5:1-2:

Then Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying: 'When locks are long in Israel, when the people offer themselves willingly--bless the Lord!'"

Judges 5:6-7:

In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, caravans ceased and travelers kept to the byways. The peasantry prospered in Israel, they grew fat on plunder, because you arose, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel."

Judges 5:12-13:

Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, utter a song! Arise, Barak, lead away your captives, O son of Abinoam. Then down marched the remnant of the noble; the people of the Lord marched down for him against the mighty."

I love that Deborah shows just how strange a women can be for God. Even though men are Gods choosen leaders, he will call upon us if and when he needs us.

Forth Anniversary!

Today is my fourth wedding anniversary. It amazes me that it has been that long. I still remember the nerves I felt on that day. The great thing about being married to C.J. is that every year gets better. God has blessed us and our marriage and I know that he is the key to our marriage. C.J. is such a great guy and I am very thankful for him.

C.J is currently in Seattle. He went on a trip with a few of his guy friends.(with my blessing) He is due back on Saturday and I can't wait to have an anniversary date with him. I'm hoping I will get a clothesline for my anniversary gift.

Women of the Bible Week 1

Lately I have been reading up on different women in the Bible. It amazes me that these women are not given more credit for the things the accomplished. Over my many years attending church many of these women have only been mentioned in passing.

I recently attended a conference called Women of Faith. At this conference Lisa Harper spoke about the different women who were in Jesus's lineage. It amazed me that I had never given these women a second though. These thoughts encouraged me to dig dipper and find out more about the different women of the Bible.

Each week I plan on focusing on a different women of the Bible during my quiet time. I plan on sharing the information that I find with my readers. If you have any information you would like to share, please fill free to do so.

This week I have been looking into the life of Rahab. Joshua 2:1-21, Joshua 6:22-25 Matthew 15, Hebrews 11:31, James 2:24-26

Rahab's story is a story of faith. This women is a great example of a women who trusted God even though she had no real reason to. She was a harlet, a women who had to sell herself to make a living. Just like today harlets (prostitutes) were seen as the lowest and dirtiest of people. The kind of person most people try to avoid.

To most people a life such as Rahabs would be intolerable. In such a situation many of us would give up on God. Rehabs faith not only saved her own life but also the members of her family. I hope that someday I can acheive this kind of faith.

Another resource for Rahab is Women of the Bible "Rahab's Story" by Ann Burton. Though this is a fictional verson of the story of Rahab it is very informative. I hope that this story might spark you interest in Rahabs story like it did for me.

Today is my little girls 1st birthday. Its hard for me to believe that this time last year I was in the hospital filling the pains of her birth. I have to say that all of the pain I felt that day was well worth the blessings that little girl has brought into me and C.J.'s life.
Since Baby Boo is no longer a baby I am going to start calling her Boo instead. It really makes me sad the older she gets, because I love babies so much. She is starting to say new words. From time to time she repeats things that other people say. A few weeks ago she said, "Tickle Spot." (We call the spot where she is ticklish her tickle spot) I have added some of the pictures that we just got done on Monday, I hope you enjoy them.

Wheat Bread

I have been using this recipe for the last few months and my family loves it. I found it on Tammy's Blog: http://www.tammysrecipes.com/homemade_wheat_bread Check out some of her other great recipes. My camera is currently MIA so I don't have any pictures. Tammy has some posted on her website if you need them.

I have made this bread with and without honey (because my little girl was to little for honey) The bread seems to stay together better with honey.

Description:

A slightly sweet, healthy half-whole-wheat bread (also includes instructions for making this a 100% whole wheat loaf!)

Yield:

1 loaf

Ingredients:

1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (see additional notes for a 100% whole wheat version)
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons instant active dry yeast

Instructions:

1. *Combine first 6 ingredients in a large mixing bowl; stir.

2. Add flours and yeast, and knead until dough is smooth and elastic, about 10-15 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover with a clean towel and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes.

3. Punch dough down; knead for a few minutes until smooth and then form into a loaf. Place in greased loaf pan and cover. Let rise in a warm place until almost doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. If loaf starts browning too soon, lightly lay a piece of foil on top of the loaf to prevent too much darkening.

5. Remove bread from oven and allow to rest in pan for a few minutes. Remove to a wire rack and cover with a cloth. Slice and enjoy while still warm! Leftover bread can be stored in an airtight bag or frozen until needed.

We use only wheat flour most of the time. If we are having guest we use half wheat and half all-purpose flour. I also like to add wheat grem in, I substitue 1/2 cup of wheat germ for 1/2 cup of flour.

Is a woman’s way of flipping you off!

Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking ‘What’s wrong?’ For the woman’s response refer to # 3.

Escapee!

My husband and I have failed to install the second half of our baby gate so we usually just stick the gate between our old crock and the wall.

Yesterday Baby Boo managed to move the gate and tried to escape, but found herself stuck instead.

Babyland General Hospital

Every little girl should own a Cabbage Patch doll. Both of my sisters and I owned and spent many hours playing with our Cabbage Patch dolls. The great thing about a Cabbage Patch doll is that they are all so different from each other. Since my sisters and I lived in Georgia, we were about to visit Babyland General Hospital, in Cleveland, Georgia. Babyland General Hospital is a Cabbage Patch wonderland. They have antique dolls and a birthplace for new Cabbage Patch dolls. As a little girl I remember it being a wonderful and exciting place.

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to tag along on my parents vacation to Georgia. While we were their my mom and I thought it would be a great chance to let Baby Boo see Babyland General Hospital herself. SHE LOVED IT! She wanted to pick up and hold all of the babies. The cool thing is that she had never show interest in baby dolls before this. Her mamaw did a great job taking pictures for us. Since Baby Boo's first birthday is coming up this month mamaw and I decieded that Baby Boo needed her first Cabbage Patch.(Baby Boo's rubberband broke right when we got out of the car)

The one bad thing about Babyland General Hospital is that it is so hard to pick just one doll. Mamaw and I picked up many doll and tried to gage which doll Baby Boo liked best. It was obvious which baby she liked best. She gave her new baby a huge hug and kiss (so cute).

Remodeling (Bathroom)

When we moved into our house the bathroom had a green tub, sink and toilet. Not to mention the pepto bismol pink walls. Lets just say it wasn't very pretty. Did I mention no shower? After living with this bathroom for three years we had had enough.

We have been remodeling for many weeks and its really starting to look good(a week and a half without a toilet). Right now we are just putting on the finishing touches and we hope to be done soon. Tonight Chief was staining our new door. Since he was busy doing that, I thought I would mop the floor while Baby Boo was laying down. When I was in the middle of mopping the floor Chief let out a huge cry(I was sure he was hurt). As soon as I walked onto the front porch I saw the problem. He had spilt half of the stain out on to our concrete porch! HA! It was a complete mess. It was one of those times in life were you just have to laugh.

Whole Wheat Zucchini Recipe

My family has always made this recipe out of all purpose flour, but it is just as great with wheat flour. If your family isn't use to eating wheat bread try using wheat for half of the flour and all-purpose of the other half of the flour. I made mini muffins that are perfect for my 11 month old little girl. You'll want to cut the cooking time down to 20 minutes if you are making mini muffins. This recipe will make 3 regular sized loafs of bread.

3 1/2 Cups Flour
2 2/3 Cups Sugar
1 tsp. Cloves
2 tsp. Baking Soda
1 1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
2 tsp. Vanilla
2/3 Cup Shortening
3/4 Cup Water
4 Eggs
3 Cups Zucchini

Soften the Shortening and cream with sugar. Beat in eggs and mix in vanilla. Combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Mix dry ingredients into first bowl. Add water* and Zucchini and mix well. Pour batter equally into three loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 to 70 minutes. Test the loafs with a toothpick to be sure they are done.

*If you are using frozen Zucchini only add water if the batter is not runny like cake batter

Our Pocket Full of Posies is a blog that will share my families many blessing. A nosegay, posey (or posie, posy), flower bouquet or tussie-mussie is a small bunch of flowers, typically given as a gift. They have existed in some form since at least medieval times, when they were carried or worn around the head or bodice to mask the unpleasant smells of the time^{[citation needed]} - literally, to keep the nose gay (to keep the nose happy). (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I consider God, my family and friends the posies of my life. I keep them around me to ward off the unpleasant things of this world.

In my blog I hope to share uplifting stories and scriptures, in the hopes of of giving the gifts of posies to you. I also hope to share helpful tips and recipes to my friends. I love reading others blogs so always feel free to send me your blog address so that I will be able to take a look.
